Christmas time

Dear all

The Fall term is already coming to an end, and after an exciting and rewarding autumn term, with dreams, schoolwork and play, Christmas holiday is just around the corner.

During the last couple of weeks, everybody have been focusing on meeting the deadlines for this semester. Students have been handing in projects, and teachers have been busy writing “feed-back” and “feed-forward” as well as grading. Comments and grading is reflecting the knowledge that has been achieved up untilnow, and it is important to remember that there are more time for learning next term to reach the knowledge levels one wishes.

It is even more important to be proud of what has been achieved so far. It is important to remember something one has learned this semester, something one did not know, or could not do at the beginning of the semester, something that has been developed. It is important to remember how it felt, how the new understanding has helped to understand something new, and to remember how it was possible to achieve it.

Perhaps the best Christmas gift is to be proud of what has been achieved this term, and give oneself and each other both time and patience to find opportunities to feel good. It is time to rest, relax and enjoy the holiday. We are all worth it.

I wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year 2018.

Open House at IES Falun

Dear all,

Last night we had our Open House event at IES Falun with a great number of visitors. I believe we had ca 230 guests, who filled our Lunch Hall and took the opportunity to walk around the school to ask questions and get things explained from our dedicated staff and students. Having so many of our own students volunteer to be guides during this evening shows that they are proud of their school. It makes a big difference for visitors to be able to get first-hand information, from students' perspectives, about the learning environment that we provide. Many visitors expressed how impressed they were when visiting the subject rooms. They especially mentioned that they were inspired by our passionate staff and our students energy.

Thank you all for making it such a rewarding evening with many possible future families to join our school.

Take care and be safe.

Junior School Award!

Junior School Award!

We have some very special news to share with you all!

A couple of weeks back, Ms Iljans and Ms Doty attended the Principals Quality Conference together in Stockholm for all Principals and Academic Representatives from Internationella Engelska Skolan. At this conference, they received an award on behalf of IES Falun!

Our school has won an award for the Most Progress in Junior School Academic Achievement across Internationella Engelska Skolan in Sweden! Based on the Nationella Prov scores in Swedish, Math, and English, our school made the biggest improvement from the 2015/2016 Academic School Year to the 2016/2017 Academic School Year.

We are very proud of the students and teachers who worked so hard last year to achieve such a special award!

Welcome to the school year 2017/2018

It is with a great honor and a belief in the future, we welcome all new and returning students, parents and staff to IES Falun for the school year of 2017/2018. This year  IES Falun has grown to 17 classes with 410 students and 52 members of staff of various nationalities.

After one mentor/class-day, one Year Team-day and two regular school days, we are off to an exciting start. Last week we implemented a parent and guardian mingle evening, with a School Soft demonstration and an introduction of IES Falun's PTA (Parent Teacher Association). For our students best interest, we believe in a strong cooperation between school and parents.

The focus of this academic year is to be promotive and preventative. For physical well-being, students' schedules include health and movement lessons, and for a more psychosocial well-being the students' schedules include Lifeskills-lessons. Lifeskills connect the learning to reality with the intention to reinforce commitment, meaningfulness and, above all, the students' inner motivation. This will be further addressed during the parent and guardian meeting tonight.

Welcome to the academic year of 2017/2018 at Internationella Engelska Skolan Falun.

Letter from the new principal

Dear students and guardians

First of all, I would like to thank the school's present and resigning principal Ms Forsberg for her effort and wish her luck in her new endeavours.

Then, I want to share, that not only do I feel a great honor and privilege to take over the role as the principal of Internationella Engelska Skolan Falun. I also feel very happy, as I feel I have come “home” again.

My connection with Falun began in my early years of youth, when I spent a lot of time in Falun with my bicycle friends in Falu CK and my ski friends in IFK III Falun Alpin during the 1980s. This connection continued when I studied at Dalarna University with a teaching degree in 1997.

Now, I'm back in this beautiful city and during the month of May, I have done my utmost to prepare school in the best way. I am proud to present our well-educated staff of 51 people, who will meet you in August and prepare all students for the future. The balance between Swedish-speaking and English-speaking is ideal for our bilingual school, 25 Swedish-speaking and 26 English-speaking, and the number of qualified teachers is 37. Together we will ensure that IES's three pillars; "Command of the English language", "A safe and orderly environment" and "High academic expectations and aspirations" is complied with. We will also focus on providing more sport, which we have chosen to call "health and movement".

I am indeed happy to be back in Falun and am look forward to getting to know you in August. The school will start on Wednesday 23rd August and further details will be posted on Schoolsoft during the summer.

In August I will invite you to a simple gathering, followed by the traditional parents' meeting some weeks later.

If you have any concerns, do not hesitate to contact me.

Have a nice summer!

Magdalena Iljans
